May. 6th, 2012 08:23 amI have ADHD, which means I have no real sensitivity to caffeine and a penchant for self-medicating.
So, since I didn't feel like going with matè yesterday, I tried a five hour energy. I'd been told that it was just like a cup of coffee by fellow law students. I figured the worst that would happen is it gave me the jitters for a few hours.
Well it did what caffeine sometimes does: it made my heart speed and made my eyes feel heavy.
But then it did something caffeine never does: it made me nauseous. Three cups of alka-seltzer and I went to bed feeling sick after fighting for every bite of food. That's 10 hours of unrelenting sickness. I got no studying done which is freaking me out because I have an exam on Monday. For which I know nothing. And I woke up today still feeling bad but also in dire need of food.
Around 1 AM, I realized why this felt familiar. It was the same feeling I get when I take antibiotics. Like I swallowed a lead brick. I can't be sure if it's because 5 hour energy nuked my gut fauna, but it feels exactly the same. And that would mean I'm going to be messed up for days.
Don't take 5 Hour Energy, kids, that's bad stuff.
