Thanks to Crysi I've been following Tiger & Bunny, which is the best thing that is on TV right now (albeit on the other side of the world). Of course, she's not here when I finally manage to catch up to the EPIC CLIFFHANGER whaaaargarble.
This should probably be the part where I pimp it to everyone! I won't spend too long on that though, because I'm way behind the curve and most of you know about it already. Anilinkz link, but I hear it's also up on Hulu, though who knows for how long. It's basically about superheroes working for a corporation that runs a reality TV show. It feels... alarmingly pertinent given the current state of politics and the way governments fellate big business.
Also one of the heroes is a super-flaming guy (Fire Emblem, yep, he's got a fire superpower) who reminds me so much of my dad's BFF from work, right down to being a tall, skinny airy-fairy black dude. Well, that and he's awesome. And according to canon no one would sponsor a big ole gaymo superhero so he made his own company and sponsored himself.
It's kind of funny because the fandom is ridiculously fun, yet Viz just bought the NAmerican licensing rights which means it's targeted at teenage boys, when the fandom is loaded with fangirls and a lot of the merch is unabashedly aimed at lady-fen. Or... really, really gay dude-fen, but I'm suspecting ladies. I don't know if it's because, in my experience, most English-speaking anime/manga fandoms tend to be female-dominated, or because Tiger & Bunny is actually aimed at women. It probably isn't, but it could be! At least in the US, women just like me are the ones watching it. ...Of course, when women like me watch shows, they tend to get cancelled for "poor ratings" because they're not getting the 18-25 male demographic, but that's a rant for another day.
Anyway! Tiger & Bunny! It's good, but you probably knew that.
