I've been casting about for inspiration lately-- I'm stuck on plot, for some reason-- and my buddy makes this post on mermaids and selkies as potentially invasive species: The real question is, where do giant squid fit into all of this? It is an awesome post in general, but I love this kind of pseudo-scientific jargon.
And she excerpts one of my favorite ideas that I came up with for Pirates: the appearance of femininity [among mermaids] is likely a hunting adaptation, with males and females being indistinguishable/
A commenter caught on to that idea and loved it, too, and the ensuing discussion led to my remembering the epic romance between Beatriz and Lucian that I never got around to writing. Hell, they didn't even get enough play in book one despite being my favorite characters. It was always a self-indulgent young love story-- the story takes place a century before book one where she's still the daughter of a rich trader and he's an accountant from a poor background-- but now I desperately need to write it, all other responsibilities be damned.
Lucian! Before he's good at wearing dresses! And Beatriz before she's used to being scary!
Yay I have a purpose again.
