Jun. 3rd, 2011 10:37 amA lot of my worldbuilding is directly affected by what I'm listening to when I think it up. It's pretty vital for the first few test fics of any given universe, and it's always interesting to see what genre it ends up in when I'm done. Lately I've been working on a science-fiction piece and Pocket Healer went "you're writing space noir!" Surprise, because I had no intention of writing noir. Same with my fairies in Miami stories, but apparently anything narrated by the wizard is noir too.
Most of the worldbuilding for Space Noir came from my Nightwish pandora station, which has a lot of Sirenia, Dark Moor, Nightwish-- rock opera kind of stuff.
But I came up with a major storyline listening to Apocalyptica, and it crystallized when Classical South Florida played Herbert von Karajan conducting Mazeppa. I couldn't find that one, specifically, but this one (Bernard Haitink and the London Philharmonic) is good, if a bit slower than I'm used to. I will now always associate Alice and Ephialtes with this piece, and I've pretty much coded their entire arc into the music. It's how I roll. It's funny because before hearing the piece, I wasn't sure if Ephialtes was a straight-up villain, heel face turn, or misunderstood hero. Guess now I know!
And that has been your classical music recommendation for the day.
