I think we should all take a moment to admire GW2's amazing looking armor, and their dye system.

It started innocently enough; I got a chainmail shirt and the colors I normally used just didn't look good on chainmail (texture makes a huge difference in how colors will look, it's both impressive and annoying when trying to match). I had a few colors to play with, more than the average starter because I passed off a bunch from Tiernan. He's not going to wear pink, especially not the pinks with names like Humiliation. I am not opposed to pink on men, just those pinks don't look like they'd work on him. Luckily for my bank space, I rerolled Marzibel because she's cute as a button, and she can wear pink.

Pink? Pink.

Then I got bored. I wanted to see what other colors I could use, especially if I could pull Purple Ice into the mix-- unlocking Purple Ice on the elementalist was the only one making me hesitate about rerolling,* so [personal profile] teleidoplex bought me the dye and said "go! Now reroll her." Unfortunately, Purple Ice looked stupid on the chainmail, as so many other colors do.

Instead I did this:

"Hey, I like those colors," I said, then frowned, unsure of my own taste. I sent the picture around to friends asking whether this was awesome or awful, and was told that it looks like an 80s cartoon.

"Yeah, it looks like a color scheme I saw in My Little Pony!" All the girl colors, rolled into one toon. Truly, truly, truly outrageous. The pink leggings are Humiliation, by the by. I have no idea why they named the color that, because while I suspected pink is humiliating and raaaah angry there is nothing degrading about pink!, I think it's supposed to be blushing-- they have tons of pinks with perfectly normal names, like Heliotrope.

Then I started changed her colors/outfit almost daily. Why? I don't know. Maybe I feel the need to get maximum usage out of all the colors I've got.

I had this top for all of 30 minutes before I found an upgrade that looked exactly like her old chainmail top. Which, funny story: this game has brought out the pretty monster in me. Mostly I am like "yes! Sensible armor! Women with busts that follow the laws of nature!" But apparently, if you make things pretty enough, all my sensibility goes straight out the window. I'm okay with midriff bearing armor. I'm okay with ridiculously big boobs. In fact, in the chainmail shirt I stopped and stared at my toon going "holy crap, she's flat."

She's not-- and there isn't anything wrong with that, either, and it isn't like a breastplate won't flatten anyone down (as is the point!) But the chainmail shirt really diminishes all curves from certain angles, and given how busty everyone in this game is, it skews your perception. She had a different, more hourglassy figure at first, but when sylvari run they pivot around the waist rather dramatically, with hips facing one direction and chest facing the other, which at least in armor turns the toon's waist into a tiiiiiny column with the appearance of huge hips/boobs. "I can't play this," I said, and rerolled her with a body that won't look quite so cartoonish when she runs (I didn't have this problem in cloth, it had to be something about the armor).

So I liked this shirt, in the shallow part of my brain that wouldn't be swayed by "she's a sword-wielding badass, stop thinking about curves and clothes." Then it was gone! Sad.

Then it was replaced by this, and the first helmet I actually leave displayed, even if I miss her bright pink glowy hair. I have a plume!

Also, there are all my dyes. Most of them are current (I think I've added Pastel Pink, since). I've bought five or six, because the common ones sell for dirt cheap on the auction house, but the propensity toward pink isn't a result of my shopping. I picked up the pinks only after I realized she had a really pink palette and I bought more because those are the good looking colors. Most armor colors are some sort of brown or pink or dingy green-gray. Which I'm sure looks fine on the toon, just not on the swatch.

There are 407 dye colors, and yet I've picked up several dyes that I already have. Sure they're all common but you'd think there'd be more variety in the common dyes.

Oh well. I can still make a variety of good lookin' outfits.

*Marzibel the elementalist had three great colors: Kelly green, Purple Ice, and a rich red. Tiernan, on the other hand, has an abundance of brown and seafoam, which makes me suspect that different characters are likely to get different dyes, because even without buying a bunch, Marzibel is rolling in the pastels. In fact, her colors are pretty similar to what she had before. She also gets a ridiculous number of dye drops-- once she got 5 in one day. I'm almost glad she's my main if only because she gets better dyes than anyone else.
