(no subject)

[personal profile] lorata and I like werewolves and shapeshifters, but we have a problem. No one writes good werewolves. And then I get an idea that I probably shouldn't write that is entirely a response to the craptacular, abusive werewolf "pack" structures that dominate urban fantasy. Why do werewolf books have packs that read more like prison gangs than, y'know... support systems?

me: and none of them are fun werewolves

Lora: I DON'T KNOW I HATE IT

me: like I DON'T SEE THE APPEAL IN THIS

Lora: I hate werewolves, I hates them precious. I hate the creepy D/s A/B/O thing they do that reads like right-wing fundie posts on how to be a good ~helpmeet only somehow hot because dicks

me: omg omg YES

Lora: like I am not even kidding I could put two beside each other, one fic and one fundie blog post and NO ONE COULD TELL

me: I was like... I kind of want to write werewolf fic where it's about a couple people KEEPING THE PACK AT BAY all "nooo we will not join your creepy bdsm club, nooooo"
but i think that's the feminist in me going NOBODY GETS PAST THE CHASTITY BELT. NOBODY. Not the creepy alpha, not his broody rival, nobody. /shotgun

Lora: plus wolves don't act like that and it makes no sense and alphas do not want omegas in nature and stop stop stop stop stop it

me: yeeeees
it's a very human experience and totally speaks to human hierarchies
...fuck I can't write that

Lora: yeeeeeah it's just weird

me: like I see it now. Girlfriends, one werewolf one not, defending against the pack. Like a redneck in a pickup truck and the werewolf in the bed while they go out at the full moon

Lora: yessssss

me: "wolves aren't creepy rapists but werewolves are because men are"

Lora: yessssss omg

The solution to the alpha's "needs" are a shotgun, not 300 pages of simpering justification of his manliness. 'Cause let's say it again. Real men don't rape.

Did I ever recommend Benighted to you? Because it's pretty much the best werewolf book I've ever read.
